Do I need a partner to learn to dance?

Absolutely not! While learning to dance can be very special and beneficial for romantic couples, two-thirds of the students that we teach come in without a partner. You will work directly one-on-one with your instructor in your private lessons, which makes learning much faster!

How long does it take to become a good dancer?

This all depends on what “good” means to you! Some people want to simply fit in and be comfortable enough to have a fun time on the dance floor without thinking too much. These students require less time than the ones who find it fun to try exciting new moves every time they step foot onto the dance floor and want to wow their partners. Be sure to speak with your instructor about your goals on your first lesson.

Where can I use my new dance skills?

You can put everything you’re learning into action right away at one of our practice parties, live music nights, or dinner shows! Outside of that, many of our students use their dancing at wedding receptions, reunions, company parties, or even just in their own living rooms. If you’re planning a vacation, going on a cruise will usually provide several different themed nights. Lastly, there are nightclubs you can go to as well that sometimes have dancing every weekend or will host special events like Latin nights or swing nights. Whether it’s salsa or country, there’s a little bit of everything out there. The more you know about your dancing, the more you have to choose from.

What dance style should I start with learning?

Some people come in with a specific style in mind that they’d like to learn. For example, a Cuban man or woman wanting to connect with their roots through latin dancing or a couple wanting to learn swing so they can dance to their favorite swing band they go to see every weekend. However, it is far more common that students come in without a clear style in mind-they just want to know how to dance! We start off with some easy general social dancing that you can use right away and, depending on the music that you enjoy, the places you frequent, and what you’re looking to accomplish in the lessons, we will customize your program to teach the styles that will best suit you and your lifestyle.”

What do I wear for my first lesson?

Wear something you are comfortable moving in! Avoid distracting clothes like tight dresses or pants that may require adjusting during movement. For shoes, it’s best to wear something that goes around your whole foot. Avoid flip flops, backless sandals, mens work boots, or character shoes. Typically, any dress shoe or flatter soled sneaker works great for starting out.

I’d like to get a pair of ballroom dance shoes, what should I look for?

For gentlemen, your first pair should be regular, non-patent, leather in a standard heel. Because of the softness of the leather, the shoes will stretch more than normal so some dancers get a half size smaller than normal street shoes. For ladies, we recommend any of the ballroom, latin, or practice heels as long as they aren’t higher than 2.5 inches. In addition, we recommend a nude or bronze colored shoe for your first pair. For a high-quality pair of dance shoes, we recommend Danceshopper.com. If you are unsure what style you might like, try a few pairs off of Amazon to get a feel for what size heel, types of straps, and color you like!”

Do I have to pick a start time and be consistent to learn to dance?

Of course, learning to dance will be easier, faster, and more fun when you can take advantage of all that the studio has to offer and can keep your lessons consistent. However, life is too short to wait for the most perfect time (spoiler alert: there’s never the ‘perfect’ time.) So, if you travel frequently or have a busy lifestyle but you have a strong reason for wanting to learn to dance, don’t wait! We have students that are gone for months at a time for work or are busy taking kids to-and-from activities during the week but they find it important to make time for themselves and make the most of their time. Our schedule is flexible and we’re here to help you meet your goals. Taking lessons sporadically is far more productive and fun than not dancing at all. So, why wait?

Who typically takes dance lessons at your dance studio?

We teach all different ages of kids and adult dance lessons. Our youngest student is 8 years old and our oldest is 84. We teach teens, preparing for prom and young couples creating their perfect first dance. We welcome young men and women with kids who are looking for time for themselves or couples in search of a unique date night. Empty nesters come to discover themselves or their relationship, while retirees join us to stay active and fill their newfound free time. Finally, we support students of all ages who want to stay busy and positive during times of grief, loss, or tough life changes, such as divorce. While it’s true that most of our students are adults looking for adult dance lessons, fun date night ideas for couples, and exciting things to do in the area, dancing is for everyone!
